An unusual structure recently opened in New York City. The honeycomb-shaped building, known as Vessel, has 154 zigzagging flights of stairs. Visitors can climb to the top, which is 46 meters (151 feet) high.
The structure is made of 75 huge steel pieces. Workers assembled the pieces with a crane and bolted them together, says architect Laurence Dudeney. He oversaw Vessel’s design for the firm Heatherwick Studio. It took two years to complete the building.
Dudeney hopes that Vessel becomes a landmark where people can meet and enjoy the views. “The core purpose of Vessel is to bring people together,” he says.
